Benchmarks of the Gold Rush Trail Foundation
June 1996 to November 2002
In general chronological order, the Foundation has met these goals:
- Identification of educational resources
Intensive survey of landmarks, historical points of interest, and public museums and open space in the historic districts of the City, generally around the original shoreline
- Establishing cooperative relationships with City institutions
Key sponsorship by the three oldest historical institutions in the City: the Mechanics' Institute, the California Historical Society, and the Society of California Pioneers, with directors on our board from them all.
- Co-development of curriculum with SFUSD
Demonstration of programs for fourth and seventh grades by curriculum experts from the San Francisco Unified School District, working with Foundation-developed lesson plans; certified by State of California.
- National and international associations
Endorsement by the Freedom Trail Foundation, Boston, consultation with the National Park Service, formal program with the American Association for State and Local History, association with other trail programs in London and Cadiz, establishment of the Sister Cities Trail Association in conjunction with the Freedom Trail.
- Geosatellite positioning of Gold Rush Trail locations
To fulfill Department of Public Works requirements, all sidewalk areas mapped.
- Trail design engineered by ADA-architect
All sites meet access needs of handicapped.
- Website developed for use by schools
Basic information about trail to be expanded as lesson plans are developed: www.goldrushtrail.org.
- Award-winning brochure developed
Comprehensive packet of information for both educational and development use.
- Audio-video materials developed
Twelve-minute video, four-minute repeating video, six audiotapes for educational sites, all with dramatizations suitable for educational use.
- Interactive panel kiosks under development
A prototype interactive display case developed, using hand-cranked power to run a six-minute CD, with digital options for participants. This device will be used for educational purposes, while a flat-panel display with full video and power is being developed for visitor use and ongoing foundation revenue.
- Content development for hotel use
The video content for the kiosk program is geared also for use in hotels on their information channel, to bring a wider audience to the trail and generate ongoing foundation revenue.
- Involvement of the business community
The foundation continues to recruit members to its board and advisory panel, both to draw on their talent and to form cooperative relationships. Because of the importance of Silicon Valley to the long-term educational goals of the foundation, this community has been singled out for engagement.
- San Francisco Arts Commission approval
Administrative approval of the gold-line program, without need for design review, has been given. A prototype line, to test the epoxy gold formulation on various sidewalk materials, was laid down by permission of the Palace Hotel and the Department of Public Works in November 2000
- Ongoing contacts with foundations
The funding to date for programs has come from three major foundations (Wells Fargo, Bank of America, Union Bank of California); several corporate sponsors (Palace Hotel, AirTouch, Wells Fargo Bank), the San Francisco Arts Commission, and individual benefactors. The foundation has conducted informative and fundraising luncheons a number of times. The fundraising committee has several proposals under consideration by foundations and continues to explore this revenue source. The foundation is working with the National Science Foundation to develop proposals.
The Gold Rush Trail Foundation is a volunteer organization and receives no city, state, or federal funds. It is supported by foundations, businesses and citizens interested in furthering its mission.
